Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ

A few questions I am regularly asked

What happens during the free consultation?

The consultation is an opportunity to discuss what you would like help with, find out about the counselling process and ask any questions you have so you feel confident about moving forward. You can find out about availability of days and times that suit you. The consultation is free of charge and there is no obligation to continue beyond this point unless you want to.

What happens after the consultation? / How are sessions booked?

Once you have had an initial consultation and confirm you would like to move forward with sessions, you will be sent a registration form and counselling agreement which sets out your sessions arrangements, payment details and how to cancel sessions or rearrange when needed.

What hours are available?

You can choose from daytime or evening sessions from Monday-Friday.
While regular weekend appointments are not available, it may be possible to arrange an occasional online session at the weekend, if there is availability to do so at the time.

How much is a session?

Counselling and Psychotherapy sessions are £80. There are also some concessionary spaces. Enquire to discuss and check availability.

Where will my sessions be?

Sessions can take place in-person at the practice rooms in central Richmond, Twickenham or Hampton. Discuss your preference at your consultation.
Alternatively, you can have online sessions from anywhere you are based. You should ensure you have a quiet, private space to talk.

How do I get there?

Each practice is in a central location which is easily accessible by bus, tube and train. See location maps below. Train stations are within walking distance. Parking is available on the street or car parks close by. The Hampton practice has a small free car park.

How many sessions will I need?

This will depend on what you would like to work though. You can discuss this at your consultation, and the decision will rest with you. You can have ongoing sessions for as long as you need or prefer to have a short-term course of sessions. If you would like to continue beyond an initial course, you can extend sessions further.

How long are counselling sessions?

Counselling and psychotherapy sessions are 50 minutes long.

How often will sessions be?

Counselling normally takes place at the same time each week. If, due to shift patterns days or times need to be flexible, you can discuss this at your consultation.

What if I have an appointment or want to go on holiday?

There is flexibility to reschedule a session if an appointment comes up and for holidays with prior notice.

Can I cancel a session?

Yes, with agreed notice, no fee is payable. If no notice is given then the session fee is still payable.

Are sessions confidential?

Yes, you can be assured that everything you say will be kept confidential unless there is a serious safeguarding or legal reason why information must be disclosed to protect the client or the public from serious risk. Legal exceptions will be outlined during your consultation.

For a client aged 16-18, do you need parental consent?

Yes. If a 16-18 year old lives with a parent/legal guardian, their consent will be required.

What about the young adult’s privacy?

The client’s confidentiality is never compromised unless there is a serious safeguarding circumstance which requires disclosure in order to protect them or someone else. This means that what is discussed in counselling is not shared with a parent/carer unless the young adult is at serious risk. These terms will be clearly outlined in the consultation and counselling agreement which will be sent to you prior to starting counselling sessions.

What if I decide I want to stop counselling?

Collaborative reviews are part of the counselling process which helps to make sure that the sessions meet your needs and that an ending can be planned for when you feel you have come to the end of your counselling journey. However, if you decide to stop earlier than planned, this is perfectly fine and no fee will be payable if the agreed notice is given.

Are you insured?

Yes, Aurora Counselling is fully insured.
